Let us do something good, move forward and make good sustainable society

When you are jobless - You think you need a job.
Once you get a job - you need more money.
Once you get more money - you need more.
It never stops even when you get more than billions (At least for some politicians).
If rich people put few percentage of their money on the education of very poor children all over the Globe, Our World would be better place. Wars can be read only in history books. Once educated they should be properly channelized to do anything they are interested which would do good to the society.
At EnviroApps we are doing something in this regards.
We give one on one training on what we know to others and get them jobs. We teach people about Environment, Information Technology, how to lead good life and help others. It is more like teaching how to fish instead of giving a fish to eat. So whoever reads this do something good and teach whatever good things you know and whatever good things you are expert to others who are in need. That way a good society can be made. Sometimes when you venture to do good, you will face hurdles from selfish greedy cunning cheaters who put in nice face. Just ignore those creatures and move forward.
We also have a vision now and have formed a team to execute that. We are praying to God to show us the way and make it success.

Food Adulteration, Toxins, Unhealthy Future Generations

Recently I have been hearing about high amount of food adulteration.
Farmers are injecting Oxytocin directly in plants to increase the size of vegetables and in cows to increase milk production.
This indirectly enters the human system and cause untreatable effects such as hemorrhage, heart, blood pressure problems and brain damages.
This increased greed can affect health of future generation. Already alcohol intake is high among young people. Along with that, uncontrolled pollution (air and water) symbiotically affect the health. What is supposed to save people from these things - healthy food - is now tainted with these chemicals - Only God can save the future generation from these greedy creatures. These greedy creatures went ahead and labeled new expiry dates for already expired medicines.

I was so upset when I heard that they are adulterating goat droppings (which is used as fertilizers by farmers).
How low these creatures went.

I hope more people should stand against this (like they did with Anna Hazare) and government should vigourosly act against these crimes or else we will have a very very unhealthy future generations.
Hearing more and more people are sick and have dreadful diseases like cancers and are diabetic.

God - Please save us from this.

We are doing our part at EA FARMS - growing agricultural products using natural organic materials.

Here is our produce - completely organic and we are proud of it.
If we can do it anybody - any farmer and people with conscience can produce it.
EA FARMS PRODUCE

Peanut (Groundnut):
Corn (Maize):

We have to eat food without chemicals. There should not be greed in making money over food and medicine.

Let us Pray, Unnecessary Deaths, Innocent Victims, Peace for the World

Whenever unnecessary deaths occur in the world (including current mumbai deaths),
all we can do is pray for every victim and their families.

Just to make a small steel pin, several people have to put in hard work:

Mining workers should mine the iron (Scientist, Government authorities should work to find and approve mining).
Steel industries are needed to manufacture steel (Again several people are involved in this process also).
Using blunt steel wire, a pin is made through several steps where so many teams and team players are involved.

However a blast destroys so many valuable things that several humans (diversified people from various religion, social status) worked together to build or create
(including loss of most valuable human lives).

It has killed so many people - dads and brothers were lost. It might have killed the bread winner of the family. Those innocent families lost their happiness for the entire life.

If only the money spent for destruction purposes was spent for families that are starving in hunger by providing food, shelter and educating their children - it would have eradicated poverty in the entire globe and there will be more positives everywhere. Peace and harmony will be there in Mother Earth.

For now: Let us continue to pray to God for peace on earth and give good mind to all people.
Our contribution will be developing sustainable lands for food production and help to form a good society.

Ganges Pollution and Swamiji's Death by Fasting, Praying to God for Peace

Swami Nigamananda fasted and died for the cause of saving Ganga from Pollution.

Praying for his soul to rest in peace and his wish to come true.
Everyone should work towards getting Ganges Clean.
Polluted environments can spring back to normal if proper actions are taken and followed (One such action).

Ganges River Pollution

Also saw videos from war atrocities that had happened recently.
Saving environment topics are nothing when considering these abuses against humans.
Only God has to give a solution for these happenings.
Let us pray for peace all around the globe.
We will be doing whatever we can do that is to work towards good environment and motivate others to do.

Fire from cell phone component industry in Tamilnadu – Environmental Effects - Air Pollution

No one was injured from the industrial fire – that is good news. However the fire burnt inflammable paints, other chemicals and sent smokes all over. This should have caused some damage to the air quality. Lots of people are living around that area and lots of agricultural lands are there near that area (Recently visited that place). Severe Environmental Damage would occur due to this. Tamilnadu Pollution Control Board should assess this damage.

News about the Fire

People from Finland were worried about the job loss when Perlos moved the jobs to a developing country.

Perlos Job loss in Finland

However it is only jobs they lost, Think about the Environmental Damage this fire has caused. The Environmental hazard that has happened to Environment and air quality of Tamilnadu is more damaging than just losing few jobs. This area is an agricultural area and this would not only damage crops but also affect the health of the people. Hazardous air pollutants will be inhaled by people living in those areas. Only years of real scientific study will identify the real damage.

Read my earlier blog about conversation between me and a graduate student about fine line between environment and economic importance:
Environment and Economics

Even though Finland was worried about Perlos Job loss, people are safe and have better environment, where as People of Tamilnadu might have got some blue collar jobs (Not the white collar jobs - may be few) from this industry being moved here, but face severe Environmental damage including Health effects from this chemical fire.

Finland Environment is getting better
Finland Emissions. SOx, NOx, NMVOC, CO, PM - all air pollutants reduced over the years. As an Environmental Scientist, I bet 100% that all these chemicals must have increased at damaging levels in the atmosphere because of this fire. Even though it is an accident, what emergency remediation action plan we have? or what rules India have regarding this (Environmental Pollution)? or who will be responsible for clean up and health problems from this industrial fire?

We still did not learn from Bhopal tragedy!. Our Politicians have other priorities – Bringing more and more such industries without proper Environmental planning or litigation.

Nokia

Industries Flocking into Tamilnadu

We should be happy and thank God, that there was no mortality in this industrial fire. However, we should wake up now (this is just a warning alarm) and create Proper Environmental Litigation and Environmental Responsibility by these industries.

Environmental Conservation in Action

There is no denying that one enjoys when present in green surroundings, pristine and clean environment. Viewing green mountains, water falls, streams, creeks, chirping birds, majestic animals and wonderful environment make you feel better. Recently, I visited Great Smoky Mountains and enjoyed the great environment when I was there. As an environmental scientist, I felt great to be in Great Smoky Mountains. Everyone I saw there (different and variety of people) had one thing in common, happiness. They were happy when doing variety of activities such as diving, swimming, hiking, walking and camping.

Pictures from Great Smoky Mountains:

Before and After Logging Pictures Link

All these happiness in a green environment was possible due to people who thought about it and conserved this place. Only few years back the trees were cut and almost made the mountains bald. Due to the conservation effort by great leaders and people who thought of future, the greenery and environment of these Great Smoky Mountains have been saved. It has become an important International Biosphere Reserve. Now let us do our part to save such remaining great environments for our future generations.

Good Projects and Political Leaders

Recently Tamilnadu people did their democractic duty excellently.
Every type of people voted to make the change.

Once Tamilnadu had great leaders. Those political leaders had excellent visions for people. They had less money in their pockets. Tamilnadu was growing with the vision of those leaders. Recent leaders want to fill their pockets. Truth is they never cared about people. During their rule what have they done? Mostly increased the corruption and have no proper infra structure.

Think about roofless schools in the villages.
Recent leaders still follow the caste system and caste based politics.
They use the language as a tool to do regional politics and curb the growth of their people. They really back off when language, regional based politics is needed to save their people. Instead they go after greed of power and money.

We destroy oceans, forests, agricultural lands, trees, and soil resources.
Recent leaders are mostly opportunistic, liars and aim to increase their wealth.

If their real wealth is accounted they will be first in Forbes list. However they leave their people, society and state in deep trouble. With their amassed wealth excellent projects can be materialized with ease and the government will still have surplus.

These greedy politicians have spoiled the state. The young politicians should learn from previous leaders who have done well for their state, country and ignore the greedy politicians. Young politicians should work for the welfare of the people, execute important projects, eradicate poverty, improve schools and education, and improve agriculture and environment.

When a small group of people can do good projects such as this Sustainable Land Development, think about how many good projects that can be implemented with the money, power, knowledge and team that the Government has.

All we can do is pray to God to have such real leaders, fend off corrupt politicians and give strength to do our job and hardwork to move forward.

Oil Drills and Wells - Should not spill oils in the Gulfs

Oil Spills are always major environmental disasters - As we witnessed recently in Gulf of mexico. As a Marine Estaurine Environmental Research Scientist, I am always fascinated by each and every part of the Marine ecosystems and how they are interconnected for the balance of the whole earth.

Now we started to dig more and more new wells in new areas of the oceans -
Recently 3 wells in - GULF OF MANNAR.
It is already a fragile environment with more than 3000 species of fauna and flora :
Environmental Impacts

The people (companies) who are drilling should take caution and do the necessary safety measures, so that Gulf of Mexico kind of spills do not occur in Gulf of Mannar. Apart from that all we can do now is Pray that Environmental disasters such as Gulf of Mexico oil spills do not happen again.

Alcoholism, Alcohol Consumption on Rise, Human Resources going waste

BRAIN, LIVER, STOMACH, HEART, KIDNEY and almost all organs are affected by alcohol.

CANCER, High blood pressure, several deficiencies and diseases are caused by alcohol.

As an Environmental Toxicologist I studied about the damages that alcohol can do to the human body.

So many articles on effects of alcohol and alcoholism are available in internet.

Even though these many dangers exist - young people tend to drink more and more alcohol.

Again due to the greediness of people , young people's life are put into danger.

This year's alcohol sale in TamilNadu reached 13 crore Rs.

Kerala also has equal amount of sales. Where is the youth going towards?

During my last visit to Tamilnadu and Kerala, I saw so many people flocking towards the liquor stores.

Whole society is turning bad, we are losing youth to alcohol monster and it is going to haunt us for long.

Human resources are going waste because of the alcohol consumption.

Hoping and praying to God that youngsters will take a new year resolution to quit consuming the monster - Alcohol.

Happy new year - 2011

Blood Boils, Hunger Death, God give Good Heart

I just read this in a Tamil newspaper.

In Tamil
In a city called Kanchipuram (famous for silk), one elderly person (90 years old)
could not take care of his handicapped daughter because of hunger. Both of them fainted
because they did not have anything to eat. The elderly person did not even know that his daughter
died because he himself was not in sense due to hunger.

To Politicians & Administrators of Tamilnadu:

Do something SOON -

You have the power to help people and please admin properly.

You have got enough money to build a buiding for supportless senior citizens. This would not cost much.

If you have a program for senior citizens it will create jobs and elderly people will be taken care.

I pray to God to give you the right heart to do atleast some good, so we do not hear such tragedies.

True leaders were there long back and they have guided you. Those golden words were never followed and these tragedies are occuring even now.

Senior Citizens"

But this type of info is for educated and good living senior citizens. What about the above support less senior citizen who died of hunger?

To youth of Tamilnadu:

Learn from these mistakes and do good to have wonderful future. Just dont be after money - you guys do good daily even if it is a small deed.

I know you good people are there and wanted to do something good. GO PLEASE DO!

True Sustainable Development for growth of good society

A picture says more than lots of writing:

While politicians steal (uncountable zero digits after a normal number) large amount of money, I pray to God that they do something good for their fellow mankind.

One more prayer: We dont need one more senseless war. Praying to bring peace for North and South Korea brothers and sisters.

Environmental Justice

I had written an earlier blog post:

Industries over Environment

Just saw a program on how indusries (especially foreign industries) are built by covering dried water bodies. Even though these industrial programs have programs towards greening the environment, they have done everything against environment in building these industries in Sriperumbudur, India.

Another earlier blog:
Eco Vs Eco

One future environmental engineer asked me the following question regarding the above blog post:

hello dr.makesh,

Considering your opinion on the Environment Ministry's decision on disallowing Vedanta from mining bauxite in Orissa I have a doubt. Where do you think should we draw a line between environmental importance and economic importance? Since I am new to this field I am still confused what viewpoint to take! I have an opinion that in the name of environmental protection we should not be a barrier to development (in this case bauxite is very important for us too).

Please correct me if I am wrong...

And, my classes have started and I have taken up courses on Solid/hazardous waste management, Chemical Principles of Environmental Design , Environmental Regulations and Policies.

My answer to it:

Thank you for the email. What I am talking about is the greed. We don't have enough forest resources in India. Already deforestation is taking a toll. We need some forest lands to be saved.
I know we need bauxite. If we allow to take the bauxite, do you think our greedy people will stop mining bauxite in limited quantity? NO. They will wipe out the whole area. They will remove the whole hill top, which will affect the environment (soil, land, water, ground water) and affect the climate. This environmental effect also have an economic cost and will easily out number the cost earned by mining.

I am also for economic growth, however it should be sustainable. If they remove hill top and mine, what are the plans to replenish it.

Why India has most tanneries than any other countries?. Is there any tannery or similar industries in Developed nations?. No. Because we just let the effluents directly to the land and do not care about the environment, people (hexavalent chromium is dangerous to people - it affects brain).

Recently I read Indians have the most Swiss bank accounts (more than 1trillion $). If they just spent few percent of that, it will be a most developed nation. Because of greed of money and not caring for our environment, lots of foreign industries are coming into India (on the basis of economic development) and polluting India. We don't have any standards and we do not implement them. Cell phone companies, car companies, etc (long lists) are flocking there. In this case POSCO - a Korea based company is showing interest in our mountains. They have beautiful mountains. Will they remove their hill top? NEVER. What we need to do is - ask them to take care of our environment too. That is what we are lacking. Day by day agricultural lands, forest lands are taken away by industries. It is also becoming dumping ground (I have written so many articles about it). Environmental Pollution will cause more economic damage than what industrial growth economy produces.

Good that you are taking up Solid/hazardous management courses. Regarding Solid waste management - you have to think that prevention is the best option rather than management. But that is not going to happen in the near future. We have to take slow steps. If we don't act now India will lose its natural resources at very fast pace and living conditions will become worst. I hope you got my point. We need economic growth but in a sustainable way.

Pl. concentrate on Environmental Regulations and Policies courses. By studying such courses, young people like you can devise policies to make sure industries have environmental sustainability plans to save the environment that they are destroying. We can bring new industries to make our economy improve, but we need proper regulations and policies in place for that and take care of our great environment.

In this case we not only saved environment, but also indigenous people (who lived there for centuries).

I have traveled to many countries and see the differences (how they protect their environment and how proud they are about it).

If you carefully account for the environmental cost of the environmental deterioration over the years, the development benefits by mining will be negligibly small. (That is what big companies do - give hard blue collar jobs to our people in the name of economy, destroy our resources and leave the mess for us to clean ).

His answer back:

Dr.Makesh, that was such an interesting mail! I have so much to learn from you. I had to read the mail thrice just to comprehend the depth of certain things. You are so very true about so many things, for example, the companies exploiting us and leaving up a mess for us to clean.

I'l surely take up Regulations and Policies seriously.

Hopefully I made a person to take this Environmental Regulations and Policies seriously and help saving our land and environment. These industries who advertise that they are going GREEN, should actually take steps to GO GREEN (even if it is a growing nation where they create their branch).

ECO vs eco

In an earlier post I had said about eco Vs ECO (eco represented environment and ECO represented ECONOMICS) and always the later won. Also was hoping that one day that tables would turn. I did not think it would turn that way this soon.
Earlier Post on 07/2010

Now it ECO vs eco - here ECO is environment and eco - is economic. This time Environment is saved:

Environment authorities of India rejected proposals to mine the mountain (Billions of $s), which would have affected the tribes.

The government has also stopped a $12-billion steel plant proposed by South Korea's POSCO in Orissa.

Earlier Post on 08/2008

eco vs ECO

Sustainable Land Development Project:
eco vs ECO - Title implies that lower case eco is for environmental and
UPPER CASE ECO for ECONOMICS. May be one day we can change that.

As our aim is to use natural resources, we tried to bring in the solar and wind power to EA Farms. However initial queries for these ended up with huge cost estimates.

We contacted a company that produces water from wind.
Their technology is good, but the quote for the system was above our limits.

Then we contacted another company for solar and wind energy Combo unit. This cost was also high.

Our power requirement will be minimum and hence we are planning to go
with regular power resources (which we have several issues also :-)) rather than SOLAR & WIND Energy for time being.

As always Economics take over precendence over Environment.
But we will not give up. EA Farms will conform with minimal usage of power and try use renewable resource as we move forward.

WATER FOR EA FARMS

Water for the farm.
As water is one of the key elements of farming, and our land has no water resource we were all praying for the help and guidance from heaven. The prayers were always there in the back of my mind even though I was involved in other activities.
14-06-2010
Finding water points at the land.
I spoke to Ravi aka captain on finding the water points at the land. This is an amazing exercise. Few humans are blessed with this power of locating the water points. Their body reacts to the ground water. Different people have different techniques, some use wooden sticks, some use metal rods, while some use water in a plastic pot. The water pot jumps around when they carry it around at the location where there is water beneath. Though Ravi himself has this capability he did not want to try for a huge land, as he has done only for building plots, which is much smaller in size. But he recommended one Mr. Ramasamy, an aged man; I guess he should be in his late 50s or early 60s who was experienced in finding for farms as well.
So, Mahesh, our driver, drove us (Ravi, Ramasamy and me) to the land after lunch.
Ramasamy started immediately as soon as we reached the land. He strode the land with his equipment, an iron rod stitched in a cloth at one end. The cloth is really long which he held on both hands and let the end with the iron piece to hang by almost a foot or slightly more, so it can swing freely. With the apparatus in his hand swinging he walked across the land moving perpendicularly in slow steps. Within 10 minutes he asked us to mark a location on the land, where he said we will get good water. Kathir and Ram, the existing farmhands started to mark the location with a stone, but Ramasamy asked them not to use stone, instead he asked them to mark with a wooden stick and cover it with coconut husks, which they did. I requested Ramasamy to locate few more water points on the land. Ramsamy performed the same act a few more times and pointed three more locations. Of which he said good water should be gotten from the spots he pointed first and third, though he said the other two also has water. Once this was done, we dropped him back at his home and paid him his fees, 1000 rupees only.
I asked him like if he would be able to advise me on the depth at which we will see water and he told me I should get it between 500 – 550 feet.
To be honest, as a man living in this technological world, I found it very hard to convince myself that a man swinging a piece of orange cloth walking around and suddenly pointing a spot and telling me, there is water source beneath the solid earth at around 500 - 550 feet below. But surprisingly I believed and my prayers grew stronger.

19-06-2010
Now, that the points were ready, the next step was to arrange for digging bore well. I went to find an auspicious time to dig the bore from our family astrologer, Mr. Dhandapani. After checking our horoscopes told me to dig the well on Monday morning before the sunrise. Hindu Almanac contains days that are good for activities like digging well according to celestial stars for each day. Now the date and time, 21-06-2010 before sunrise and latest by 7AM was fixed.
Ravi spoke to the local Agent for the bore well diggers. Later I met him and arranged for the diggers to be ready at 4.30 am on 21-06-2010. He said they will be ready even the night before. But since nobody will be at the farm, it was decided that they will wait at Vadakipalayam pirivu, on the way to the land and I will meet them at 4.00 am and we will proceed to the farm. But while they were waiting, a gas carrier overturned on the road at Vadakipalayam pirivu and the roads were blocked and all the vehicles were evacuated from the surrounding places by Police in fear of the truck catching fire. Luckily nothing of that sort happened. So, the bore well trucks moved some more interior and waited at Vadakipalayam. So, I asked Mahesh to be ready at 4.00 am on 21-06-2010. I also asked Mahesh to buy the pooja items required to offer prayers before starting to dig.
21-06-2010
I woke up at 3.30 am and got ready. Then we left home at 4.00 am. We were stopped by police at Vadakipalayam pirivu as they haven't yet cleared the gas truck. So we had to detour back to Pollachi and took another route via Vadugapalyam, Ponnavaram to reach Vadakipalayam. Then we woke the diggers and they trailed our car. Once they reached they (there were some 15 workers in the team) sprung to action immediately. I showed the point (the one Mr. Ramasamy spotted first). They positioned the truck carrying the driller such a way that the spot was in the exact center of the drilling bit. After they setup, I prayed sincerely to all Gods and ancestors requesting for water. The drilling started around 6 am.
The team of diggers was working so efficiently. I felt sorry for them as they did not have protective gear to protect them from dust that was being sucked out of the earth through the drilled hole. They also had a cook travelling with them, who setup makeshift kitchen and prepared some tea and breakfast for them. They also took bath using water from the next farm. Mahesh gathered from them that they only bathed once in a month.
I was so exited with the whole process I didn't feel hungry. Then I realized suddenly the time was 9.00 am and so I asked Mahesh to go back to Pollachi to have his breakfast and buy something for me to eat as well. I also asked the person who currently takes care of the land to eat with me. We decided to have him continue his work at the farm. Talking to him I realized that he has a passion for the farm activities and we need people with such passion and commitment.
At this time, the bore was like 190 feet deep. We were seeing different colors of fine powdery earth being sucked out. It must be that as the bore goes deeper it should be going through a different type of rocks beneath the earth. By around 11.30 there was some thick water mixed with the powdered earth came out. But the driller continued to drill. According to them, it was already 480 feet deep. The Manager asked me if we can continue to drill until 800 feet. I was wondering how will I decide, because nobody can predict the depth were we can get water. Later I found that even those water points identified using the satellite imaging techniques have failed. So now I was left with no other options except seek the guidance of the Almighty and the ancestors. I told him that the diviner has told that we would get water around 500 - 550 feet. so I told him to continue digging and we will decide when we cross the 550 feet mark. I was contemplating 700 feet in my mind. The manager left as he received another call from the agent that there was another bore to be dug the same day later.
So at around noon suddenly there was water spurting out when the drill rod was pushed down by the compressor.
I knew the prayers have been answered (Video above). What a feeling, cannot be explained but only experienced. I thanked all Gods.
So we requested the driller to continue to dig as far as possible. But once the water pressure was high, the drill bit moved very slowly and it was finding very difficult to continue to penetrate the rocks below. So he said that it will be the last rod that he can dig. We agreed and totally the bore well had consumed 30 drill rods, which was 560 feet deep. Also on top they inserted a 47 feet PVC pipe so that there will not be any slippage of loose soil on top. The diggers said our water outcome was very good and said it was like 3-4 inches of water. All those gathered were very happy. Now we will be able to save the rare coconut trees (nattu maram) that are currently present and needs water as quickly as possible. Also we used the first water (Kudam) to do the abhisekam to the Amman in the temple near the farm.
Now that the key element, Water, is ready I foresee a lot of activities lined up for the next few weeks, which I feel I will be able to achieve with the guidance from Above.

India Visit

I recently visited India.
Positives I noted:

Highways between cities - were good. Road travel is getting better (
Still improvements are needed such as
Direction Boards, Solar lights, more trees on the side of the roads etc. More work needs to be done inside the cities regarding traffic and roads.
It is ultimate chaos inside the cities).

Businesses are blooming. Business buildings are excellent with International standards.

Negatives:

Unfortunately, I had to attend a funeral. The burial ground was horrible.
It was not at all walk able. Cleanliness was never there.
The last ritual should be done in a clean place.
Here it was opposite.
There are so many rich educated people living in each and every town (especially this town), I am not sure why they left the burial grounds like this.

Also, I saw so many young people standing in long lines in liquor shop.
I was so much worried how many resources are going waste.

Already so many people's health are deteriorating because of environmental pollution,
Chemically grown food etc.
Liquor and cigarette smoking will kill people at young age.

We still have only 10 years to bring Dr. Kalam's dream to true.
Wake up people and do whatever you can, even if it is small thing.

Our team is moving forward with our projects that will contribute towards the 2020 vision of Dr. Kalam.

EA Project - Moving Forward - Hats off to Brother

Next step in EA Project.
We have the main person in the project area now.

He sacrificed the following things for EA Project:

IPL BIG MONEY - WHY NOT PROVIDE TO POOR CHILDREN PLAYING CRICKET

In 2008 I wrote the following in my blog:

My View: With all the profits IPL made, they should atlease provide shoes, gloves and equipments to the underpriviliged children who play cricket in villages of the corresponding teams.RICH-POOR
INJURY DUE TO PLAYING CRICKET WITHOUT SHOES:

It is the third successful IPL season (moneywise)- IPL has become second to NBA based on first-team salaries on a pro-rata basis (Global Sports Salary Review). I read in news only about - main IPL cricket people fighting for millions and billions for cricket franchises.
News:
Pune was bought by Sahara Adventure Sports Group for $370 million, the Kochi franchise was bought by Rendezvous Sports World Limited for $333.3 million

We were offered $50m to quit - Kochi franchise

WIKI ON IPL

Never ever read that these teams provided any shoes or cricketing materials (may cost only thousands for them) to any village school children playing cricket.

EXPIRED DRUGS MAKING BACK TO MARKET WITH FRESH LABELS

How can people do this:

Bringing back Expired drugs into the retail market by fixing fresh labels bearing new manufacturing and expiry dates.

As a person who loved studing Toxicology, I was astonished to see how people could do this. How many people would have been affected by this. Drugs would act differently after expiry date. It sure would have killed so many people and would have created toxic reaction to various people instead of treating them.

Is money that important for these people above the health of the other person.
Will this person give expired medicines to his mom, dad, children and dear ones?

Please people never do these type of business.

Central Drugs Standard Control Organization, India should perform regular test on random samples from market to eliminate this type of business.

We have visionary leaders who wanted to take countries forward. Think about their sacrifices.

Even if you cannot do 1% of Good that they did, do not do anything bad.

I am sorry even to write about these people in my blog.

Praying to God that these type of selfish human with such type of greed should never be in this world.

Natural Calamities - Needs Monitoring & Alerting Systems

We are in 21st century and still facing enormous amount of deaths due to natural calamities.
We know about the plate tectonics several years before.
We know several countries lie in the Earth's fault layers.
We have excellent structural engineers and several quality institutes conducting
geological, civil and structural engineering, environmental and monitoring research.
Authorities who work for welfare of World such as United Nations should
provide monitoring devices to countries that mandatorily require monitoring systems. These systems can monitor future natural disasters and can signal or alert people to move to safe zone.
Builidngs should be built with earth quake resistance capability.
Several studies have been made for earth quake resistance capability building with minimal cost.
These information needs to be provided and implemented in all countries atleast along the fault lines.
This type of work should have been started in 20th century even.
Better Late than Never.
Also we should follow - PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE - not only in medicinal apsect, but in every other problems.

Several studies such as the following:
Monitoring
Under Sea Monitoring
Warning Systems
Building Tutorials

are available. We have to integrate these and create monitoring and alerting systems which would save several lives.

Now we have to
pray
for the people who is affected,
for natural calamities not to happen again
for implementing monitoring and signalling systems and mainly:
Please give whatever you can to the affected people.

Dr. Abdul Kalam - What can I give?

In one of my earlier blogs I wrote:

Praying to God to bring more people into Earth, who contributes to betterment of the Earth, it's inhabitants and it's future generations.

Last weekend I had the pleasure of seeing Dr. Adbul Kalam in person at Casselberry Hindu temple auditorium near Orlando, FL.

He gave an excellent speech and I thank God for letting me to see such a person. He wanted each and every person to always think ...what can I give. He said even if you cannot help monetarily, you can help by teaching or doing any voluntary work, wherever you live.

Our EnviroApps Sustainable Land Development Project will be done following his words.

Again praying to God - One day there should be a peaceful world as Dr. Kalam envisioned. People living in harmony, creating a sustainable future without any selfishness must be the future, I Pray.

Please give and do Good....

Toxic Dry Walls, Lead Toys, Contaminated Tooth Paste, Defective tires... Long list

Drywalls - smells like sulfur(rotten eggs) and it tarnishes metals and ruins appliances and electronics by corroding pipes and wires - newly added to the long lists of
Contaminated toothpaste, lead-tainted toys and defective tires.
Children are growing in these toxic environments rather than healthy environment.

People (Manufacturers) - Please atleast try to do Good things...so future generations can live in a proper environment.

EASMSAE - Palindrome for Pachyderms

As an environmental scientist, I am always fascinated by the forest resources near my house in India (Pollachi) and Asian elephants living there.

My previous article on Elephants.
I got an opportunity to write a proposal to save these great animals and submitted it to a funding agency - Asian-Elephant-Conservation-Fund:

EASMSAE PROJECT SUMMARY:
A. EnviroApps Sustainable Model for Saving Asian Elephants
Proposal Summary:
EnviroApps Inc, an environmental application entity, is proposing a model project directed to save the Asian Elephants with a committed team. Our previous experience includes providing GPS consulting to government authorities to capture dangerous illegal poachers who had destroyed several threatened fauna and killed invaluable Asian Elephants for their tusks. Also we have created awareness through our blogspot and other partners about Environmental Awareness and Eco-Justice.

Proposed areas of the project -:
Area (Figure 1):
Tamil Nadu – India – Western Ghats – Anamalai

Figure 1: Map of Proposed Trans-Boundary Project Area

Table Information:
Location Area Forest Area Elephant
Population Threat
Tamil Nadu
Anamalai 130,058 km² (50,216 sq mi). 22,643 km² (8,742.5 sq mi). > 4000 Reduction in forest area elephant population and their habitat

Threatened Elephant Population:

The proposed area consists of various threatened environment including elephant reserves. Even though the elephant population in the State is reasonably stable, their habitat is shrinking and they move towards the urban land, which is an immediate threat to the pachyderm population. Another major threat such as poaching had come down in this region, and this could be one of the reasons for the reduction of the elephant population. Current male-female ratio of the elephants in the wild in Anamalai is 1:10. This area needs to be mapped as “protected area” and elephants need to be identified, radio-collared and data should be stored and available to everyone in need. If immediate action is not taken, Eco-justice will not be served to the remaining few wild pachyderms in this area.

However after few days got a reply as follows:

This is to inform you that your proposal (ASE-0428) titled “Enviroapps sustainable model for saving Asian elephants (EASMSAE),” was reviewed recently by the proposal review committee. The review committee decided not to fund this project.

We appreciated the opportunity to review your proposal and please continue to do your part in protecting the Asian elephants.

Good Thing: There are lot more scientists who are putting their efforts in saving these Great Animals.

My Sincere Thanks to KinathuKadavu MLA Mr. S. Damodharan and K. Selvaraj, Forester for giving their support letters in a short notice. It is good to know that several people are interested in saving our forest, environment and animals including pachyderms.

We will be working with - EnviroApps Sustainable Model for Saving Asian Elephants - EASMSAE - Palindrome for Pachyderms in whatever ways we can.

One thing which I felt very much satisfied after submitting the proposal was that I got an email from someone whom I don't know with the following photos:
Guruvayoor Elephant:

Guruvayoor Elephants:

Elephant's mouth - it is like saying thank you:

Offering Bananas

It was like God sent thankyou note for the true work to protect the elephants.

KOCHI: India’s second Arctic expedition to study climate change and bacterial life, coordinated by the Goabased National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR), has a Kochi connection. Leading the team is A A Mohammed Hatha, Reader, Department of Marine Biology, Microbiology and Biochemistry, Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat).

Hatha will lead a team of biologists from different parts of the country to study the impact of climate change on microbial communities of the Arctic region. The team leaves from Mumbai for Oslo, Norway, on June 18. From Oslo they will fly to Ny- Alesund, an island in the Svalbard archipelago of Norway where India’s station Himadri is situated. Other members of the team include Sabu Thomas and Wilson Abraham from the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, Thiruvananthapuram, Savita Kerkar of the Goa University, and researchers Om Prakash, Rakesh Mishra and Santanu Ray.

“Savita and I will be working on the recycling of biogases and the levels of sulphur and phosphorus in the regions,’’ said Hatha.

The other scientists will study icebinding proteins in algae and ecological imbalances caused by glacial meltdown. The team will be in Himadri for one month. “We are a team of biologists. The next team will include geologists,’’ he said. Himadri can accommodate only 10 people at a time. Arctic sea ice is a treasure house of information relating to the earth’s climate during the ice ages, and scientists study it to predict future trends in the earth’s climate.

India has access to Svalbard because of a treaty with Norway which has sovereign rights over the area. Currently, Norway, Germany, France, Britain, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea and China have research stations in the area.

India’s research station Himadri, which is the northern-most permanent human settlement, was set up last year and is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. Scientists’ interest in the Arctic Circle centres around the fact that it is a huge reservoir of hydrocarbon and mineral reserves. -- kochi@epmltd.com

I pray for the success of this Arctic Expedition.

HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS - Stockholm Convention

Hazardous pesticides and industrial chemicals that can
kill people, damage the nervous and immune systems,
cause cancer and reproductive disorders
and interfere with normal infant and child development.

The nine new chemicals now listed under the Stockholm Convention are:

Alpha hexachlorocyclohexane to Annex A;
Beta hexachlorocyclohexane to Annex A;

Although the intentional use of alpha- and beta-HCH as an insecticide was phased out years ago,
these chemicals are still produced as an unintentional by-product of lindane.
Approximately 6-10 tons of other isomers including alpha- and beta-HCH result from each ton of lindane produced.

Hexabromodiphenyl ether and heptabromodiphenyl ether to Annex A;
Tetrabromodiphenyl ether and pentabromodiphenyl ether to Annex A;

Bromodiphenyl ether congeners are a group of brominated organic substances that inhibit or suppress combustion
in organic material, which are used as additive flame retardants.
Brominated diphenyl ethers are mainly manufactured as commercial mixtures where several isomers, congeners and small amounts of other substances occur.

Chlordecone to Annex A;
Chlordecone is a synthetic chlorinated organic compound, which was mainly used as an agricultural pesticide.
It was first produced in 1951 and introduced commercially in 1958.
Current use or production of the chemical is not reported.

Hexabromobiphenyl to Annex A;
Hexabromobiphenyl (HBB) is an industrial chemical that was used as a flame retardant, mainly in the 1970s.
Based on existing data, HBB is no longer produced and is not used in new or existing products.

Lindane to Annex A;
Lindane was used as a broad-spectrum insecticide for seed and soil treatment,
foliar applications, tree and wood treatment and against ectoparasites in both veterinary and human treatments.
Lindane production has decreased rapidly in recent years and only a few countries still produce it.

Pentachlorobenzene to Annex A and C;
Pentachlorobenzene (PeCB) was used in PCB products, dyestuff carriers, as a fungicide,
a flame retardant and a chemical intermediate such as the production of quintozene
and it may still be used for this purpose.
PeCB is also produced unintentionally during combustion in thermal and industrial processes.
It appears as an impurity in products such as solvents or pesticides.

Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid, its salts and perfluorooctane sulfonyl fluoride to Annex B;
PFOS is both intentionally produced and an unintended degradation product of related anthropogenic chemicals.
The current intentional use of PFOS is widespread and found in products such as in electric and electronic parts,
fire fighting foam, photo imaging, hydraulic fluids and textiles. PFOS are still produced in several countries today.

The 12 initial POPs covered by the Convention include
nine pesticides (
aldrin,
chlordane,
DDT,
dieldrin,
endrin,
heptachlor,
hexachlorobenzene,
mirex
and toxaphene);

two industrial chemicals (
PCBs as well as hexachlorobenzene, also used as a pesticide);
and the unintentional by-products, most importantly dioxins and furans.

Further information is available at www.pops.int

People and government should ban these chemicals and move to Sustainable Natural Agricultural Practices.

Pharmaceuticals Cause Serious Environmental Harm In India

ScienceDaily (Feb. 7, 2009) — Many of the substances in the most common medicines are manufactured in India and China. Some of these factories release large quantities of antibiotics and other pharmaceutical substances into the environment. There is an obvious risk of these releases leading to resistant bacteria.

Cetirizine, ciprofloxacin, citalopram, levofloxacin, losartan, metoprolol, norfloxacin, ofloxacin and ranitidine were used in this study.

Bailouts, Tragedy, Prayer and Green Jobs

So many bailouts (trillion dollars) going on and a news that
a 93-year-old man in central Michigan, who owed some unpaid
electric bills froze to death inside his home because the electric
company cut the power, made me to think something is not right.
However most of the world is not running smoothly now:
Economic Problems, Joblessness and Wars:

Problems in MiddleEast
Problems in Africa
Problems in Asia...
Problems Everwhere!

When people begin to do good things even to their enemies, then everything will be alright.

Praying to God to bring that mind to each and every person in the world.
Also praying to God to bring more people like the following great people to earth:

Good News: So many Green Jobs are going to come. At least we are going towards a good path.

Beautiful Environment & Worst Destruction

After hardwork and setbacks in the end of the year (2008), took a break to get more positive energy. I drove to Keywest, Florida and Everyglades.
As a marine estuarine environmental scientist I enjoyed my every moment at Keywest, Florida.
Lots and lots of beautiful marine environment.
Fauna & Flora at Everglades.
Driving through long bridges surrounded by water never get erased from your mind.
Hopefully we can preserve these type of environments all over the world.

This trip gave me more required positive energy.

However seeing some gruesome pictures of children bleeding from war made me to pray to all Gods (irrespective of religion) to give human beings more peace.
