Save Forests

On this March 21, 2022 - World Forests and Trees day, writing this blog article:

Forests are considered as Lungs of the Mother Earth.

It is the Forests that saving us from human induced pollution and Climate Change.

Instead of wars, human kind should join together and work towards planting trees,  building forests and sustaining them for the benefit of Mother Earth's current and future Inhabitants.

Some of the Beautiful forests and trees through our camera:

Disney Wilderness Preserve

Ocala National Forest

West Virginia River Gorge Mountain Forests

Western Ghats, India

Top Slip, India

Sequoia Tree Forests - Mariposa Grove

As these forests are in danger of forest fires, pollution, deforestation we must focus on Saving these wonderful forests and sustain them for sustainability and survival of current and future Inhabitants.
It is shame and sad that people throw plastic, glass bottles and garbage in these areas (Pictures from Volunteers):

Thanks to these great volunteers who are selfless in doing this hard manual labor (rain or shine) to collect these spewed garbage in the forest areas.

A great salute and appreciation to them. Other great volunteers have created forests:

Forest area we created at EAFARMS

Let us join together, avoid deforestation, avoid polluting in forest areas,  plant trees which will save and protect our forests.

Thank you for that.

Communication Tools Positives

Communication tools have become so important during lock down.
Messages reach at faster rate now than any other time from the past. These tools could be used for spreading negative news, but at the same time the tools could be used for faster communication and executing fruitful projects also. These tools should be positively used to immediately eradicate two evils from the face of  Mother Earth -

Poverty and Racism.

One cannot believe that these exists even in 21st century and even after wonderful leaders sacrificed their precious lives for eradicating these evils.

Have written the following articles 5 years before on eradicating poverty and racism.

2015 - Eradicate Poverty

2014 - Ecojustice and No to Racism

But even now real change did not happen, These evils still persists in Mother Earth.

Along with this animal cruelty has also increased. As an avid elephant well wisher it is hard to believe that a pregnant elephant was given a pineapple with explosives in it,

As much cruelty is seen in that incident more heartbreak comes when a human kneels on another human's neck and choke fellow human to death even when he was screaming for his breath. Where did humane characteristics go?

We cannot change the past. But moving forward changes could be made.

Using communication tools spread, educate and guide future generations to get rid of these two evils from the face of
Earth. Then we can proudly say we are in the 21st century,
until then whatever progress we make as humans it is still at zero point.

It should start from every individual especially the children (future generations)  and spread the love and equality to the co-inhabitants of mother Earth.

Education is the key tool to eradicate both poverty and racism.

Using communication tools such as whatsapp and google blogspot we implemented several useful projects with ease.

In a school whatsapp group, a classmate who is a doctor requested to supply 20 beds to a childcare ward. Our group had a schoolmate who is manufacturing eco-friendly mattress and immediately we all pitched in for required amount of beds. Those beds were supplied within couple of days. This project was completed with such efficiency and on time, because of these communication tools.

These type of activities eradicate poverty and racism was never involved in any step of this wonderful activity.

In a college whatsapp group, we joined hands and selected a small village and to better it through educationwe collected funds and disturbed it for current young college students to use towards their education. It motivated those young future generations to do good when they shine. This is how societies are built.

These type of activities eradicate poverty and racism was never involved in any step of this wonderful activity.

In social whatsapp group we joined hands to clean up main water body of the town. It was used as garbage disposal area that included broken alcohol bottles. After several weeks of communication, team work, hard work the pond became so clean and usable.

This is how you build clean societies. When young people are guided properly they take up a notch further than what we expect.
We have to positively believe in them and guide them properly and I am sure we are almost there to eradicate these evils.

These type of activities eradicate poverty and racism was never involved in any step of this wonderful activity.

In another social whatsapp group we communicate, contribute and help a great soul who is serving food for underprivileged poor orphaned old age people daily for the past several years.

His family does the hard work, cook great food and distribute to these old people who survive only by themselves. We salute him for doing this for 365 days of the year, rain or shine.

This type of activities eradicate poverty and racism was never involved in any step of this wonderful activity.

Now we are planning to join hands of these people involved in all the projects to plant and grow trees as much as we can.
I am sure when we join hands we will be able to execute the project successfully with these communication tools. Dr. Kalam and Dr. Nammalvar had dreamt of such environment and great society where we live harmoniously with our co-inhabitants. The trees mentioned by Dr. Nammalvar Ayya - such as neem, mango, papaya, curry leaves, amla, coconut, lemon, bananas, jackfruit and cattle feed trees to support cattle growth will eradicate poverty and provide valuable nutritional requirement for any person. When poverty is eradicated  other evils also will automatically vanish.

A small tree planted today on this World Environment Day may be the key to become a forest in the future.

Dear sisters and brothers, eradicate greed and use these communication tools wisely and let us grow as a wonderful human society that takes care of other Earth's inhabitants also, such as trees and animals.

We also communicated through another whatsapp group and gave webinars that contributed towards enriching the faculty members who are really key to instill VALUES into the young minds during the lock down. Thorough our website we have trained many people in IT field especially in databases with easy steps.
It is also free and anyone with desire to learn databases from anywhere can try educating themselves following these simple steps and can enhance their values in IT field.

Relentlessly we will contribute by sharing our knowledge, bettering the environment and  our societies, communities  for the future generations. That way these two words - Poverty and Racism will be words of past history.

Together let us wipe out poverty, racism and injustice to other species from the face of our beloved Mother Earth. Let us take this resolution, pledge on this precious World Environment Day.

EARTH_DAY_2021

As we celebrate Earth Day 2021, we have to take more steps towards preserving sustainable quality Earth and leave behind a better place for the Future Inhabitants. We should be very careful in every step  we take forward to protect what we have in every discipline. There are better alternatives which are more environmental friendly, sustainable than destructive historical methodologies we use. Young scientists have developed so many innovative concepts which does not affect the Earth, works with Nature and preserves it's quality for the current and future inhabitants. This habit should start from every individual with the thought that their deed will not affect the environment in any way. We have to conserve resources and move forward from non-renewable resources as much as one can. We have to start taking steps towards these goals.

EARTH DAY 2021

We concentrate on Sustainable Agriculture Practices at EAFARMS. Also create Environmental Awareness in social media such as Facebook, Quora and others.

It was an enormous loss of a great Environmentalist during this Earth Day Month -
PadmaShri Dr. Vivek ( Actor)

who had ardently followed our great leader Dr. Kalam to plant 33 Lakh Trees and maintained them with a goal of planting 1 crore trees. Big Salute to him.

Several such people including  oldest

have done so much in creating better environments,

We are following them and working towards that goal of planting one crore trees following them. We strongly motivate and stand behind the volunteers for Greening the Environment. Simultaneously, we want to eradicate Hunger and Poverty from the face of Earth.

Wherever you are, please join us in our goals and contribute towards BETTER EARTH, QUALITY EARTH and SUSTAINABLE EARTH for current and future Inhabitants. Let us take that pledge on this EARTH DAY 2021.

MRSA, India Trip, Environmental Projects

It has been a while since I updated enviroapps blog.

Trying to help a friend in his damaged house, somehow contracted MRSA bacteria. It was a very bad experience that I had to go through.

MRSA Prevention:
Keep your hands clean by washing thoroughly with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand rub as soon as you come from an outing.
Thanks to immediate attention and prayers, I am back to normal after couple of months.

Also, I traveled to India. I could see the difference in India because of the economic boom.
People driving high end cars, roads are becoming better (Still not that excellent).
These temples were built more than 1000 years ago and look as fresh as a new structure.

Since greed has taken over, the structures that has been built at recent past is withering away very easily.

Also, very little is focused on Environment and Pollution. Still Plastics are floating everywhere. Garbage thrown at will and nothing has improved on that issue. All roads should be like this with trees on the sides.

Anamalai Road

I heard that it was smelling pesticides before the rains. Thanks to good monsoon, the environment looks clean and not smelling pesticides.
Hopefully they will learn and make these areas pollution free and clean.

EA Farms project is moving forward as we envisioned. Dairy is moving along with several varieties of plants and trees being planted.
Within few years we will reap the benefits of these. I could smell fresh air from the variety of trees we planted there. Again rains have made it green. We are producing pure coconut without any chemicals and extracting very pure coconut oil. Also we are happy to produce milk that is uncontaminated and its pure bye- products. I had the most wonderful tasting butter from our farm. Peanuts that were grown also was very tasty. When I was young student, I had read in Tamil Mariyathai Raman Kadaigal that some one had fine lunch that consisted of thayir (yogurt) and agathi keerai (sesbania grandiflora also know as - august tree leaves or humming bird tree leaves) and it was the best food one could eat. I tried that and always felt that was so true. This time from EA Farms I savored the best yogurt and agathi keerai. Also I had the opportunity to feed agathi keerai to the cattle.

It was great pleasure to meet my professors in PSGCAS Environmental department. Dr. Palanivel and me went for lunch together and discussed various topics. He has started an Environmental lab - Greenlink Analytical and Research Laboratory (India) Private Ltd

Greenlink

I had the privilege to visit the lab and felt very happy. In this era of "REAL ESTATE BOOM", it feels better to know that people are still willing to do such endeavors. Thank God I had the opportunity to get guidance from such wonderful personalities.

Another day, we visited my friend Dr. Ravi's Aviculture farm - Wild County farm stay which is in Sethumadai - foothills of Topslip.
Wild County Farm Stay

I strongly recommend to stay at this place and enjoy nature at its best.
Very happy to see wildlife thriving at these areas.
Wild Monkeys

Nilgiri Tahrs

All these areas were very clean
But others areas were looking like garbage dumping sites with solid wastes including plastics. The cleaniless to keep the environment should come from individuals. Hopefully they understand this and keep their environment clean as these places I visited. Please contribute towards "Clean India".

Overall had one of the best time of my life.

Water Scarcity, Innovative ways to produce potable water and natural Energy Resources

Water scarcity is rising at an alarming rate in certain parts of the world.
Fresh water bodies that depend on rainfall are completely drying due to the fact that climatic conditions are constantly changing and weather patterns are being affected. Deforestation and Construction (River soil removal) have caused so many side effects.
Drought can cause entire Nation to succumb.
Just saw the news that at Tamilnadu (where I come from) there are no rains and water levels are deteriorating at an alarming rate.

Soon people may even have tough time getting potable water.

As an Environmental Scientist, my concern is

What the government and scientists are doing to curb this water deficiency problem?

Tamilnadu has hundreds of universities.

Tamilnadu has thousands of colleges.

These educational institutes have very intelligent students who are guided by intellectual and experienced professors.  Why are these universities not researching on alternate water producing topics and produce water?.

People from Tamilnadu have excelled in variety of fields all over the globe.
However, Tamilnadu still has several hours of power cut and shortage of water.

What I am pointing to is - why are these universities and colleges are not researching on novel and innovative methods of producing water at affordable prices.

Ironically, Tamilnadu has the largest desalination plants in whole South east Asia and they have a long coastal area to utilize.
There are innovative technologies such as

Water from air.

Self water filling bottle.

Efficient Desalination - using Nano Technology.

Future Cheap alternatives for desalination - nanotechology filters.

Also solar, bio, wind and geothermal energy can be used along with wind and hydro generated power.

As an individual and group of people, who wanted to do something for the roots, we sincerely tried to get and implement these technologies. but could not afford to do so. We are still trying though.

Sarcastically,  I can say that  I am sure government can fund these studies with the huge profit they make from TASMAC - Alcohol effects.

What we do is to plant as many trees as we can and save them at our EA FARMS SONA (Sustainable Organic Natural Agricultural) site. Hope these trees helps and brings rain there in the future.

Our area trees:

Also, we are planning to use as much as natural resources at EA Farms.

How to change negatives by being sustainable

Mountain Mining
மரத்தை அறுத்து போட்டாலும்...Deforestation Cutting Trees
பல மணி நேரம் மின் வெட்டு செய்தாலும்...
தண்ணீரே கிடைக்காமல் போனாலும்...
இயற்கை வளத்தை அழித்தாலும்...Titanium Mining
விவசாய நிலத்தல் வீடு கட்டினாலும்...Industries Flocking
கழிவுகளை கொட்டினாலும்...Cancer Village, Dumping
அரசாங்கமே சாராயத்தை விற்று மக்களை குடி மகன்களாக்கினாலும்...Liquor
தமிழ் மீனவனை சுட்டாலும்...
இனத்தையே அழித்தாலும்...Innocent Deaths
கோடி கோடியாய் ஊழல் செய்தாலும்...Food Adulteration
அரசியல்வாதிகள் என்ன சொன்னாலும்... என்ன செய்தாலும்..Selling Expired Drugs
தமிழ் நாட்டு மக்கள் சகித்து  கொண்டே இருப்போம்...
தமிழன் என்று சொன்னால் தலை குனிந்து நின்று விடுவோம் போல்....

What we can do and are doing:
Grow trees, Grow agricultural products with out contamination, Treat people equally and give opportunities, make sustainable awareness, create environmental awareness, eradicate poverty, teach good things to the society whichever ways we can.
See the big canopy trees (below picture). It serves as home to lots of birds and also aids in hydrological cycle. It helps in lots of ways including providing cooler shades while resting during hard farm work.

We are also rearing cattle to provide good milk.
We are taking action to do good things, hoping and praying it will grow to an enormous level. As we know, hard work is paying off. Wild peahens are feeling safe and laying eggs in our farm.

Our farm is becoming Natural Integrated Sustainable Agricultural Farm. We will grow along this and create awareness  to the greedy people who are accumulating money by destroying natural national wealth, that it is not the only way to make money. It can be made by natural ways also with full of happiness without destroying anything.

MOUNTAINS, ROCKS - SAVE THEM

Every day we hear about aggressive mining of Granite for making crores of rupees. Greedy irresponsible people who don't care about future of the country make huge mountain disappear. Mountains are there for a reason. They are very important resource for the country. They provide minerals to the ecosystem. By mining aggressively along with cutting numerous trees these people for sure, will turn the nation into a desert. In doing so, they affect the health of poor people who work there. Mining causes to release dust and radon gas that are inhaled by poor workers which affects their lungs that leads to lung cancer. Mining also can cause voids, affecting balances in rocks that leads to seismic waves which induces earth quakes. Environment and Health deteriorates because of such mining practices. With all that money, they and their future generations will be only enjoying the Desert Environment in the future. Rocks are very important for soil formation. Also it is equally worse to remove sand and soil from river beds. I see pictures of huge machines removing loads of very important soil resources from the river. This will not only affect the environment but also affect the country's economy. These people think they can make more money by mining to last soil particle, but what they ignore is the future of the country and its people. Hey illegal mining People -  STOP illegal mining and soil removal  immediately, at least for the sake of your own grand children, if not for the great country.

Good thing that these huge Granite mountains are out of your reach :-).
Yosemite - El Capitan - The granite monolith:

Yosemite - Half Dome - A Granite Dome:
You should read how these wondeful granite mountains have been saved and secured - National Parks.

John Muir Quote:
“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn.”

One could feel that positive vibes on these mountains - Me in Yosemite Mountains:

All we see and hear is that granites are mined beyond limits, River soils and sands are removed at unprecedented levels, Trees and forest are destructed at alarming rates. Human resources are depleted by government supplies of liquor.  Corruption everywhere as that of 2G SCAMS.
OH MY GOD: Once again stop all the above negatives including - STOP AGGRESSIVE MINING for GRANITE and SAND REMOVAL FROM RIVER BEDS. If not it is going to affect you and your future generations also.

One More Forest Resource Depletion in India

News: - (News India):
SALEM: In a novel campaign, farmers and environmentalists who have joined hands to fight an iron ore mining project at Kanchamalai in Salem, filed 530 applications under the Right to Information Act with the Department of Forests en masse on Tuesday.

Over 700 farmers with their families converged on the District Forest Office on Tuesday. Catching the officials unaware, they filed individual applications, seeking details of the proposed project to mine iron ore from the pristine surroundings of the Kanchamalai hills by a joint venture company floated by Tamil Nadu Industrial Minerals Corporation Ltd (TIMCO) and the private steel major Jindals.

The magnetite ore to be mined is to be used for manufacturing iron ingots at the Mecheri plant of the South India Iron and Steel Co Ltd (SISCOL), a Lakshmi Mills-TN government JV taken over by the Jindals.

Officials initially said only one application would be received. But the people insisted that every family affected by the project wanted to know to what extent the project would impact their lives.

The applications contained five questions pertinent to the project and the Forest Department’s response to the forest clearance petitions filed by the company, besides the department’s EPA (Environmental Impact Assessment) documents.

According to official sources, TIMCO and SISCOL joint venture wants 1,000 acres of mineral-rich hills in two places in Tamil Nadu. While 638 acres is sought at Kanchamalai, revered for the indigenous medical practitioners and rich herbs, 330 acres has been asked for at Tiruvannamalai.

Around 90,000 trees at Kanchamalai and 2 lakh trees in Tiruvannamalai (recently collector of Tiruvannamalai wanted to plant more trees) will be felled once the project is cleared by the Forest department.

Indicating that the Forest department has given its green signal for the project (which it rejected earlier), Forest department officials said, “Things are no more in our hands but with the Supreme Court, which sent its Empowered Committee on May 29, 30 to Kanchamalai to give its report.”

Some one has to take initiave to stop deterioating the already depleted small forest resources in India.

Received 8 September 1999.
Available online 25 March 2002. Abstract
The ecotoxicological effects of mining effluents is coming under much greater scrutiny. It appears necessary to explore possible health effects in association with iron ore mining effluents. The present results clearly demonstrate that iron-ore leachate is not an inert media but has the potential to induce lipid peroxidation. Peroxidation was assessed by measuring oxygen consumption in the presence of a reducing agent such as ascorbate or NADPH and a chelator such as EDTA. Labrador iron ore is an insoluble complex crystalline material containing a mixture of metals (Fe, Al, Ti, Mn, Mg,…, ) in contrast to the iron sources used for normal lipid peroxidation studies. The metal of highest percentage is iron (59.58%), a metal known to induce oxyradical production. Iron ore powder initiated ascorbic acid-dependent lipid peroxidation (nonenzymatic) in liposomes, lipids extracted from rat and salmon liver microsomes, and intact salmon liver microsomes. It also revealed an inhibitory effect of NADPH-dependent microsomes lipid peroxidation as well as on NADPH cytochrome c reductase activity. However, nonenzymatic peroxidation in rat liver microsomes was not significantly inhibited. Cytochrome P450 IA1- and IIB1-dependent enzymatic activities as well as P450 levels were not affected. The inhibition could be due to one of the other components of iron ore leachate (Mn, Al,…, ). These effects of iron-ore leachate indicate that a potential toxicity could be associated with its release into lakes. Further studies are necessary to explore in vivo effects on aquatic animals.
Author Keywords: iron ore; peroxidation; cytochrome P450; liposomes; microsomes.

Above article was published as early as 2000 and still we did not learn the lesson. There will be several other issues with Air, Land, Water and Human Health while mining for iron.

We:
1) remove forests as fast as we could.
2) deplete, pollute water resources as much as we could.
3) import e-wastes as much as we could
4) put toxicity into air, water and Land as much as we could
5) have few people with environmental awareness, concerns and have very few environmental laws and implement them properly

When will we be environmentally conscious?

TamilNadu

On December, 2011 in my 100th blog post I wrote:

I was born in Tamil Nadu and had good education there until M.Phil (Bharathiar University - Environmental Sciences specializing in Environmental Physiology). Moved to USA to pursue
Ph.D in Environmental Sciences. God gave me privilege to complete MS in Computer Science also. During this period I have traveled so many places and had vast experiences.
Acquired environmental knowledge from excellent people who were very knowledgeable in these fields and want to do something for Environment.

Even after several decades of independence and great rulers with future vision, Tamil Nadu state still have not lived up to its potential.
We have best institutions - IIT, Anna University, REC, several other universities and best schools in India. But what has improved in these years of independence.
We still have poverty, lots of pollution and environmental problems. For example - we have so many polluted areas where so many industries pollute the fertile resources.
Several part of the state are without trees. We don't care for our soil resources - river beds are dug for using soil for constructions and more and more buildings are built in agricultural areas.
We spoil our lands, forests, soils and marine environments, as much as we can. Foreign industries also flock over here. We did not learn even several years after Bhopal disaster. Proper Environmental laws and mitigation have to be designed, implemented and strictly followed. Escrow accounts should be maintained by the Government, funded by all these industries for environmental benefits. These industries should show their environmental improvement plans, how they are going to implement them and what actions will they take in case of environmental issues. I am certainly sure that these foreign industries will do these things to save their environments in their country. So they should equally treat the country they are using to manufacture their products and getting the profit. These environmental benefits can be efficiently implemented with very little percentage of their profit.

We have best natural resources such as SOLAR and WIND. We have been utilizing wind (I personally feel we went overboard in putting up the so many windmills). But we need to tap on Solar energy.
Also in Tamil Nadu, We always have been fascinated by the movie industry. We have been selecting movie people as our rulers for the most period after the independence. I am not against movie people coming into politics, but all I am asking them is to do GOOD AND MOVE FORWARD if they end up as political winner.

These days I see more and more people flocking to TASMAC - irony is that their main office is in a road that has a name starting with Gandhi ( who stood against liquor - Still Prohibition is practiced in Gujarat - his birth state).
As an Environmental toxicologist, I am always against any toxic substance affecting health. I am crying from my heart seeing our young resources flocking into these liquor stores. See how this bad and evil industry have flourished in front of us.
Already we live in extremely polluted Area (AIR, WATER, SOIL and FOOD). Along with that TASMAC products will do a symbiotic effect on these people's health. These people also smoke. How much one's heart, kidney and brain can take.
I need not say this, they themselves have said that in their website - http://tasmac.tn.gov.in/brands.htm - The topmost letters in the webpage in red letters - MADHU - NAATUKKU, VETTUKKU, UYIRUKKU KEDU = meaning - ALCOHOL - BAD FOR COUNTRY, HOUSE AND LIFE. Even the government is knowingly doing this evil thing for money.

So many negatives - industries flocking (wrote an earlier article on 2008) and polluting Tamil Nadu environment, Negative Politics with only greed as objective and no ethics, abusing environment (extracting non renewable resources and depleting the sterile agricultural lands, building non environmental friendly system which would affect exponentially in the case of natural disasters) without proper following of environmental law.
Building systems without any limits with greed as only objective and not caring for environment, human health and future generations.Fracking can cause pollution and additives that are needed can cause so many adverse affect on human health, animal health and environment, contamination, toxic chemical exposure, sterile lands and Earthquakes. Now without any hesitation you are trying to do fracking in the rice bowl area. Please don't do for the sake of future generations.
Cutting off trees, creating concrete jungles on lakes and watershed areas, building non environmental system all along polluted coast, removing top soil from river beds and rivers, removing mountain tops - all these are leading to desertification. Already the area is affected by severe droughts,
God men, Politicians, Educators, Hospitals to name some - You know who you are and you have earned enough for your eight generations to follow - so Please do something good for all the people especially future generation (which includes you children also).

எவ்வளவு மொட்டை அடித்தாலும் தாங்குவான் தமிழன்.

I can only pray for the future generations.  Youngsters should learn from all these happenings and take control for the future generations to come. Internationally, Hate crimes have increased and some of the innocent people have been killed. Where is the World going?. We need good leaders to take control of the situation and provide appropriate solutions.

Now it is February, 2017 and the state of Tamil Nadu has become more worse. I am settled in USA and I always wanted to do good things for the ROOTS. We are doing that in many ways. But Nature - rainfall has almost stopped and slowed us down.My brother who was an IT expert in Singapore has become sustainable Farmer. He started farming in 2010 and until now we did not get proper power (utility)  even after 7 years for agricultural purposes. As educated farmers, we face these So think about the normal farmers what they had to go through.
We are proud of our cattle we rear.
But we are more worried about the negatives that are taking place.
As a son of a honest Tax Officer,
Dad

who worked in Tamil Nadu Government - Department of Commercial Taxes, I am too worried about the corruptions. and non ethical happenings, All I can do is do our good deeds such as helping and training people and businesses to get better opportunities and Pray to God for Positives to Tamil Nadu. Historically, We had very very positive personalities such as Thiruvalluvar   (who contributed the great Thirukural which gives us details of how to lead, live a life), Avvaiyar (who gave us Aathichoodi which starts with அறம் செய விரும்பு meaning - Intend to do right things), Bharathiar and several greats from Kamarajar,  to  the recent Great Dr. Abdul Kalam. So along those lines praying for Positives to my Brothers and Sisters. On May 2011, I wrote this blog topic on leaders and youngsters should select and elect good leader(s). Praying for everyone. Peace and prosperity for All.
