Anaimalai River Water Hyacinth Crisis – Restoration Strategy

This invasive aquatic plant has accelerated in growth during the 2026 El Niño cycle, creating urgent concerns for water security, agriculture, biodiversity, and public health. The Problem: Water Hyacinth Infestation

Water hyacinth (Pontederia_crassipes formerly known as Eichhornia crassipes) is one of the world’s fastest-growing aquatic weeds. In nutrient-rich and slow-moving water, it can double its biomass within 10-15 days.

Key Issues

* Thick mats block sunlight and reduce dissolved oxygen.

* Fish mortality increases due to low oxygen levels.

* Evaporation rises, worsening water scarcity.

* Mosquito breeding increases, raising public health risks.

* Water flow slows, increasing flood risk.

* Irrigation intake points get blocked, affecting farmers.


Why Anaimalai Is Vulnerable

The Anamalai-Pollachi belt is a high-productivity agricultural zone, especially for coconut farming. Severe El Niño conditions have created ideal conditions for  Water hyacinth growth.

Contributing Factors

* Reduced river flow due to drought.

* Increased nutrient concentration in shallow water.

* Untreated sewage entering the river.

* Stagnant water in certain stretches.


Root Cause: Point & Non Point runoff:

Water hyacinth thrives in nutrient-rich water. Its presence indicates:

* High BOD and COD levels.

* Excess nitrogen and phosphorus.

* Detergents and organic waste.

* Low dissolved oxygen.

* Heavy metals 


Cost-Effective Restoration Strategy



A multi-layered approach is essential for long-term success.

1. Mechanical Removal (Primary Method)

* Use weed harvesters or conveyor-belt collectors.

*  Suitable for large stretches.


2. Manual Removal + Community Participation

* Volunteers and local workforce can clear shallow edges.

* Builds awareness and ownership.


3. Containment & Prevention

* Install floating booms to prevent downstream spread.

* Conduct regular upstream monitoring.


4. Biological Control

*  Introduce Neochetina weevils.

* Helps reduce regrowth naturally.


5. Pollution Source Control (Critical)

* Intercept sewage.

* Install DEWATS systems.

* Upgrade STPs.

* Enforce zero direct discharge.
