Among these, olla irrigation stands out as one of humanity’s most elegant water‑saving techniques. The word “olla” (Spanish for “pot”) refers to a porous clay vessel buried near plant roots. When filled with water, it slowly releases moisture through its walls - directly to the root zone - minimizing evaporation and runoff.  

This simple, gravity‑driven system transforms dry landscapes into thriving oases, making it ideal for El Niño‑affected regions where rainfall becomes erratic and groundwater levels drop.

The principle was the same as today’s olla:  

- Porous clay allowed slow seepage.  

- Mulch and husk layers reduced evaporation.  

- Gravity flow ensured equal distribution without pumps.

Ollas are porous clay pots buried near the root zone. They release water only when the soil becomes dry, creating a self‑regulating moisture system.

🛠️ Step‑by‑Step Setup for Coconut Trees

1. Choose the Right Olla

- Capacity: 8–12 liters for adult coconut trees  

- Material: Unglazed clay  

- Shape: Round belly with narrow neck  

2. Dig the Placement Pit

- Distance from trunk: 1.5–2 feet (feeder root zone)  

- Depth: Leave the neck above soil  

3. Install the Olla

- Place the pot upright  

- Backfill with soil, ensuring tight contact around the pot  

- Fill with water and close with a lid to prevent mosquito breeding  

4. Add Coconut Husk Mulch


Spread 5–7 cm thick coconut husk around the basin:

- Reduces evaporation  

- Adds slow‑release potassium  

- Keeps soil cool  

5. Add Organic Mulch Layer

Use:

- Dry leaves  

- Coir pith  

- Sugarcane trash  

- Groundnut shells  

Thickness: 10–12 cm

🌾 Watering Schedule During El Niño

- Fill olla once every 5–7 days

- Avoid flood irrigation — it wastes water and leaches nutrients

- Coconut husk rings around each tree  

- Trench composting between rows  

- Green cover crops like sun hemp or horse gram

This technique has been tested in a friends farm where a Miyawaki method forest was created using this technique. This is a water scarcity area, and trees were planted in 2019 and clay pot method was used for minimal water but efficiently utilized by the trees. Six year and one can see the grow of the trees and now it is forest ecosystem there.
