Devastating Hurricanes

Charley, Frances, Ivan.....
were some of the hurricanes I experienced as a Floridian. While waiting for IRMA to pass through Florida as an Environmental Scientist I want to mull about few environmental issues

During  thunderstorm Fay I wrote about my experience, It scared me and now we are facing more powerful storm Irma. I hope and pray for people in it's path.

These strong oak tree branch is no match for strong hurricane such as IRMA.

They easily break away and can be very dangerous projectile.

Some of us deny that there is human induced climate change and we don't need to worry about it. These disasters are natural rather than human made. Yes I agree these are natural disasters. But I want to point out that we have increased the power of these, The more the temperature of water,  the more storm intensity, Also we have affected the coastal areas (coastal flora is gone) and built high rises on the edge of the beach. So when it hits, we have very high damages,

I had opportunity to teach little kids about climate change and how it affects humans using a simple model

and work with lead scientists. The above picture is a simple model and the below picture is a real damages from Google Images search (coastal areas after hurricane IRMA):

This is the truth. 

Now we are at a point that we have to curtail the pollutants for the benefit of future generations. We cannot afford high category storms. For our part, we will be working on simple methods such as planting trees which would act as a sink for CARBON DIOXIDE and create awareness on this issue. So please act wisely and think about these deadly hurricanes whenever you have a better and alternative choice. 

Now we have planes that fly through the eye of Hurricane and get more and more data.

Hopefully with all the big data, powerful computer systems and softwares we can accurately predict the hurricane paths in the future.

Plant trees as much as you can.
You can place an earthen pot half buried near it and pour water. This oldest drip irrigation (watering) technique helps trees grow. .I recently read that used glucose dripping bottles are being reused for watering the plant and they act as a very good drip irrigation tool.

Alcohol Evil , Tamil Nadu, THEEYAVAI THEENDATHEY Tamil Book, Tamil Learning

Alcohol is Evil - It is number one killer. This evil has caught up in TamilNadu. Sad that youngsters are into it - because of the government sponsored TASMAC. It has rooted heavily in TamilNadu and it is very very sad that people die at very young age due to this evil.

More than 2000 years ago, Great Tamil poet Thiruvaluvar advised on Liqour Abstinence), but now Tamilians are exactly doing the opposite of what he said:

'வள்ளுவன் தன்னை உலகினுக்கே தந்து வான்புகழ் கொண்டது தமிழ்நாடு' – மகாகவி பாரதி.

அந்த தெய்வபுலவர் அய்யன் திருவள்ளுவர் 2000 ஆண்டுகள் முன்பே கள்ளு (சாராயம் - மது)ண்ணாமை  பற்றி அறிவூட்டுகிறார் :

குறள் 921-930 கள்ளுண்ணாமை (Liquor Abstinence):

குறள் 921:

உட்கப் படாஅர் ஒளியிழப்பர் எஞ்ஞான்றும் 

கட்காதல் கொண்டொழுகு வார்.

தமிழ் உரை:

மதுப் பழக்கத்திற்கு அடிமையானவர்கள் தமது சிறப்பை இழப்பது மட்டுமல்ல; மாற்றாரும் அவர்களைக் கண்டு அஞ்ச மாட்டார்கள்.

எப்பொழுதும் கள்ளின்மேல் காதல்கொண்டு, அதனோடு பழகி வாழ்பவர் பகைவரால் அஞ்சப்படாது எளியராவர்; பலராலும் மதிக்கப்படுதலாகிய ஒளியினையும் இழப்பர்.

English meaning:

A wine-lover strikes no fear in his foes And his glory wanes.

Those who always thirst after drink will neither instill fear (in others) nor retain the light (of their fame). 

குறள் 922:

உண்ணற்க கள்ளை உணில்உண்க சான்றோரான் 

எண்ணப் படவேண்டா தார்.

தமிழ் உரை:

கள் குடிக்காதீர்! மீறிக்கள்ளைக் குடிக்க விரும்புவீராயின், சான்றோரால் மதிக்கப்படுதலை விரும்பாதவர்கள் குடிப்பீர்களாக!

மது அருந்தக் கூடாது, சான்றோர்களின் நன் மதிப்பைப் பெற விரும்பாதவர் வேண்டுமானால் அருந்தலாம்.

English meaning:

Drink no wine, or let them drink it Who do not care what wise men think.

Let no liquor be drunk; if it is desired, let it be drunk by those who care not for esteem of the great.

குறள் 923:

ஈன்றாள் முகத்தேயும் இன்னாதால் என்மற்றுச் 

சான்றோர் முகத்துக் களி.

தமிழ் உரை:

தன் பிள்ளைகள் செய்யும் குறும்புகளனைத்தையும் பொறுத்துக்கொள்ளும் மனமுடைய பெற்ற தாயின் முன்பாகவும், கள்ளுண்டு களித்து நிற்றல் விரும்பத்தகாத தீய செயலாகும். 

அப்படியிருக்கவும் சான்றோர்கள் முன்பாகக் கள்ளைக் குடித்துச் செல்லுதல் எத்தகைய தீங்காகும்? எண்ணிப்பாரீர்!

கள்ளருந்தி மயங்கிவிடும் தன் மகனை, அவன் குற்றங்களை மன்னிக்கக் கூடிய தாயே காணச் சகிக்கமாட்டாள் என்கிறபோது ஏனைய சான்றோர்கள் அவனை எப்படிச் சகித்துக் கொள்வார்கள். 

English meaning:

When a drunkard's glee hurts his own mother, Why speak of the wise?

Intoxication is painful even in the presence of (one's) mother; what will it not then be in that of the wise ? 

குறள் 924:

நாண்என்னும் நல்லாள் புறங்கொடுக்கும் கள்ளென்னும் 

பேணாப் பெருங்குற்றத் தார்க்கு.

தமிழ் உரை:

கள் குடித்தல் என்ற, எல்லோராலும் போற்றப்படாத பெரிய குற்றத்தைச்செய்பவர்களுக்கு நாணம் என்று சொல்லப்படுகின்ற நல்லவள், 

நேரில் பார்த்தற்கும் அஞ்சிப் புறமுதுகுகாட்டி ஓடி விடுவாள்! கள் குடிப்பவர்கள் அறவே வெட்கத்தைவிட்டவர்கள் ஆவர்.

மது மயக்கம் எனும் வெறுக்கத்தக்க பெருங்குற்றத்திற்கு ஆளாகியிருப்போரின் முன்னால் நாணம் என்று சொல்லப்படும் நற்பண்பு நிற்காமல் ஓடிவிடும். 

English meaning:

The good lady Shame averts her face From the disgusting vice of drunkenness.

The fair maid of modesty will turn her back on those who are guilty of the great and abominable crime of drunkenness.

குறள் 925:

கையறி யாமை உடைத்தே பொருள்கொடுத்து 

மெய்யறி யாமை கொளல்.

தமிழ் உரை:

பொருள் கொடுத்துக் கள்ளை வாங்கிக்குடித்து, ஒருவன் போதையால் தன்னை மறந்த தன்மையை அடைதல், 

உலகில் எவ்வாறு நடந்து கொள்ள வேண்டுமென்ற அறிவு இல்லாமையைக் காட்டும் செயலாகும்.

ஒருவன் தன்னிலை மறந்து மயங்கியிருப்பதற்காகப், போதைப் பொருளை விலை கொடுத்து வாங்குதல் விவரிக்கவே முடியாத மூடத்தனமாகும். 

English meaning

Rank ignorance alone will pay for and get Self-ignorance.

To give money and purchase unconsciousness is the result of one's ignorance of (one's own actions). 

குறள் 926:.

துஞ்சினார் செத்தாரின் வேறல்லர் எஞ்ஞான்றும் 

நஞ்சுண்பார் கள்ளுண் பவர்.

தமிழ் உரை:

நன்கு ஆழ்ந்து உறங்குகின்றவர்கள், உயிர்ப்பு உடையவரேனும், நினைவை இழத்தலின் அந்த நிலையில் செத்தவர்களின் வேறாகக் கருதப்படமாட்டார்கள். 

அதுபோலக் கள் குடிப்பவர்கள் நஞ்சினை உண்பவர்களின் வேறல்லர்.

மது அருந்துவோர்க்கும் நஞ்சு அருந்துவோர்க்கும் வேறுபாடு கிடையாது என்பதால் அவர்கள் தூங்குவதற்கும் இறந்து கிடப்பதற்கும்கூட வேறுபாடு கிடையாது என்று கூறலாம். 

English meaning:

The sleeping do not differ from the dead - Nor wine from poison.

They that sleep resemble the deed; (likewise) they that drink are no other than poison-eaters. 

குறள் 927:

உள்ளொற்றி உள்ளூர் நகப்படுவர் எஞ்ஞான்றும் 

கள்ளொற்றிக் கண்சாய் பவர்.

தமிழ் உரை:

எப்பொழுதும் கள்ளை மறைவாக உண்டு, அறிவு மயங்கிக்கண் சோர்பவர்கள், தம்முடன் உள்ளூரில் வாழ்பவர்களால் தமக்குள் மறைவாக இவர்களது குற்றங்கள் எல்லாம் உளவறியப்பட்டு, நகையாடி இகழப்படுவார்கள்.

மறைந்திருந்து மதுவருந்தினாலும் மறைக்க முடியாமல் அவர்களது கண்கள் சுழன்று மயங்குவதைக் கண்டு ஊரார் எள்ளி நகையாடத்தான் செய்வார்கள். 

English meaning:

Don't say, "I never drank": Secrets will be out when drunk.

Those who always intoxicate themselves by a private (indulgence in) drink; will have their secrets detected and laughed at by their fellow-townsmen. 

குறள் 928:

களித்தறியேன் என்பது கைவிடுக நெஞ்சத்து 

ஒளித்ததூஉம் ஆங்கே மிகும்.

தமிழ் உரை:

மறைவாகக் கள்ளுண்டுவிட்டு, யான் கள்குடித்தறியேன் எனப்பலர் நடுவே கூறி ஒழுக்கமுடையவர்போல் நடித்தலைக் கைவிடுக்! ஏனெனில் மனத்தினுள் வைத்து ஒளித்த அக்குற்றமும், 

அவ்வாறு ஒளித்த அப்பொழுதே வாய் சோர்ந்து முன்னையளவினும் மிக்கு வெளிப்படும். கட்குடி பிறரால் அறியப்பட்டுவிடும்; 

மது அருந்துவதே இல்லை என்று ஒருவன் பொய் சொல்ல முடியாது, காரணம், அவன் மது மயக்கத்தில் இருக்கும் போது அந்த உண்மையைச் சொல்லி விடுவான். 

English meaning

As well search for a drowned man with a lamp under water As reason with one drowned in drink.

Let (the drunkard) give up saying "I have never drunk"; (for) the moment (he drinks) he will simply betray his former attempt to conceal. 

குறள் 929:

களித்தானைக் காரணம் காட்டுதல் கீழ்நீர்க் 

குளித்தானைத் தீத்துரீஇ அற்று.

தமிழ் உரை:

கள் குடித்துக் களித்துப் பழகிப்போனவனை, 'அது தீதென்று' சான்றுகாட்டித் எடுத்துக்கொண்டுபோய்த் தேடுவதற்கு ஒப்பாகும். கள் பழகிவிட்டால் திருத்துதல் அரிது

குடிபோதைக்கு அடிமையாகி விட்டவனைத் திருத்த அறிவுரை கூறுவதும், தண்ணீருக்குள் மூழ்கிவிட்டவனைத் தேடிக்கண்டுபிடிக்கத் தீப்பந்தம் கொளுத்திக் கொண்டு செல்வதும் ஒன்றுதான். 

English meaning:

As well search for a drowned man with a lamp under water As reason with one drowned in drink.

Reasoning with a drunkard is like going under water with a torch in search of a drowned man. 

குறள் 930:

கள்ளுண்ணாப் போழ்திற் களித்தானைக் காணுங்கால் 

உள்ளான்கொல் உண்டதன் சோர்வு.

தமிழ் உரை:

கள்ளைக் குடிக்கும்பழக்கமுள்ள ஒருவன், தான் கள் உண்ணாதிருக்கும் சமயத்தில், தன்னைப்போல் பிறனொருவன் கள் குடித்துக் களித்தாடுவதைக் காணும்பொழுது, 

தானும் முன்பு இவ்வாறு தானே கள்ளுண்ட அறிவுமயக்கத்தில் ஆடி இருப்போமென்பை நினைத்துப் பார்க்க மாட்டான்போலும்! நினைத்துப் பார்த்தால், அதனாலாம் இழிவு உணரப்பட்டுக் கள் குடித்தலைத் தவிர்க்கக்கூடும்.

ஒரு குடிகாரன், தான் குடிக்காமல் இருக்கும்போது மற்றொரு குடிகாரன் மது மயக்கத்தில் தள்ளாடுவதைப் பார்த்த பிறகாவது அதன் கேட்டினை எண்ணிப் பார்க்க மாட்டானா? 

English meaning

When a drunkard sober sees another drunk Why does he not note his own damage?

When (a drunkard) who is sober sees one who is not, it looks as if he remembered not the evil effects of his (own) drink.

Tamilnadu, ignoring his advice are into heavy alcohol consumption and destroying the greatness of Tamilnadu.

In every Tamil movie they play that alcohol is evil and should be avoided, but the scene in the movie is that - the boys are drinking and smoking. I hope and pray that this changes soon. It has come to a point that someone should create awareness of this Arackan (Evil). I have been writing in my blogs about the alcohol and bad things (mainly health issues) that occur.

Let us eradicate this alcohol evil destroying our great Tamil Nadu. Alcohol Sales and consumption  has been increasing in Tamilnadu exponentially. It is really sad that it is the main income source to run the government. 

Alcohol is the number 1 killer in the World. Alcohol has destroyed several poor families because the earning member of the family who consumes alcohol dies early and leaves the family with widow, children and elderly parents. They are pushed to poverty because of this Alcohol evil. There are comparatively low number of alcohol rehabilation centers and ample help cannot be obtained from these centers. Our team RCHA (Resource Centr for Human Affairs) trained women on fibre knitting so they could be independent and earn by themselves without being affected by the alcohol consuming earning member of the family.

Let us join together, educate our children on the alcohol evil and support affected families by procuring eco friendly bags which supports them monetarily and simultaneously protect the environment.

India Summer Visit 2017

I had a chance to visit India this summer - 2017. (Previous Trip).

As usual wonderful time spent with family and friends.

Morning - attended cricket nets 

Me and Coach 

if the monsoon rains were not there.

Then visited friends, had lunch with them and had lots of discussions (Quality Time).

Mainly visited EA Farms.

After 7 years of hard work by my brother, it has shaped up very well.
He has planted more than 1000 trees and plants.

Monsoon this season has slightly helped. Praying for more rains.
It is shaping up as we envisioned. Still waiting for agricultural (utility - Power) current (We still did not get it after 7 years).
Solar power has cut the power dependency into half.
Agro-Forest area has some trees grown tall.
We have added VanaRaja and GrahmaPriya Chickens to the farm. They bring aesthetics and clean up worms that forms flies.

They are good addition to the farm apart from cows and goats.

Still planning to plant more trees. My brother is also playing an important role on
Organic Farmers Cluster

which includes a girl with MBA degree doing agriculture. I spoke to some of the members and they were very keen to produce chemical free pure agriculture products. I discussed about value added products. How they need to sun dry the products and make it as powder or oil, which can survive for longer period and fetch them more money.

Also my Scientist friend Dr. Hatha visited me and we went to the farm. He had brought some trees and we planted them.

During the middle of the vacation, we had a road trip to great historic temples such as Kanchi Kamatchi, Thiruvanamalai and Chidambaram Thilai Nataraja Temple. Great temples.

During this visit saw Cauvery which has the name Aganda Cauvery (Wide Cauvery) but it was Varanda Cauvery (no water Cauvery). Felt bad.
Still saw lorries queued up for getting the river soil (sand).
Most of these parts are covered by Karuvelam trees (Prosopis Juliflora) and plastic bags strewn across the land.

Highways were good. Some of them were even good as American Highways.
However the interior villages are still bad. Big pot holes in the road, No proper street lights and fundamental infra structure.
Indian villages are considered as backbones of India. So they must have all the basic infrastructure by which it will become the country envisioned by Dr. Kalam.

I wish and pray when I visit India next time these Villages will Shine brightly and I would say without hesitation that India has grown and developed as Dr. Kalam has told.

Until then we will do our part.
